Title of presentation :Success and Identity through Mobility and Transport

Mobility and transportation initiatives can be used as a core component of a city' s  sense of  cultural identity. This  paper  shows  that transport can be a powerful tool for cities to help to balance the wide range of objectives that decision-makers may have.  Careful policy design and system planning can ensure that transport contributes to economic, environmental, quality of life, social inclusion and health ambitions.  Furthermore, through thoughtful design, transport can become an iconic  part of  a c ity's  identity.      This paper will present a City Mobility Index which currently includes over 40 global cities.  This is one technique which can allow us to understand city dynamics and to bring forward the right transportbased solutions to ensure successful cities.  The Index uses 15 quantitative and qualitative indicators to measure a cit y's  progres s  towards an ideal end-state in which transport is user-focused, sustainable and efficient. The Index can be used to understand current performance and can assist in the identification of routes for improvement.  Comparisons can be made with other cities on the Index to allow cities to learn from the activities of others.  The paper will present examples of best practice within the field of transport and mobility.  In particular the examples will focus on wellperforming transport systems which have contributed to urban development, growth or cultural identity.
