Mashary Al-Naim is professor of
architectural criticism at the faculty of
architecture at Al Dammam University, Saudi
Arabia. and was a former chair of the
Architecture Department at King Faisal
University (KFU) and former dean of the
advancement in (PMU).
Dr. Al Naim has a PhD in Architecture from
the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne. He
served on numerous architectural and design
juries (such as Arab city award, Sultan
Qabos Award and King Abdullah of Jordan
Award) and has consulted on countless design
projects throughout the world, but
especially in the Middle East and Gulf
Region.
Al Naim is an active researcher, a prolific
journalist, and practicing architect. He
serves as a senior editor of Albenaa
magazine (the oldest, widely distributed
architectural journal in the Arabic World)
since the year 2000, and writes a weekly
column in Al-Riyadh Newspaper (major local
Newspaper) since 1996 and a monthly column
in several journals. He reviewed two
projects for the Aga Khan Award in
architecture in 2007 (Karachi and Algeria).
He served in the editorial board of a number
of international magazines. Al Naim was a
member of many scientific committees in many
international conferences.
Al Naim worked with in a think-tank team
from Islamic countries appointed by the Aga
Khan Cultural Trust to review architectural
education in this part of the world in
2007-2008. Also, he contributed with a
number of intellectuals in a special issue
published by the Middle East Institute in
Washington MEI about urbanization in the
Middle East 2009
Dr. Al-Naim has published in both English
and Arabic on topics related to
sustainability, environmental behaviour
studies, identity and symbolism in the built
environment, traditional and contemporary
architecture in the Arab countries and
architectural education and practice.
He published several books including:
