3XN and Waterfront Architecture

Kim Herforth Nielsen, Principal Architect of 3XN, reflects on the studio’s waterfront architecture by discussing the effect of water and architecture on people’s behaviour. Water is compelling for human beings as it is constantly changing; from silently mirroring it’s surrounding to dramatically demonstrating the powers of nature. Water is inspiring, it generates activity and reflection. 3XN has a preference for the waterfronts; both office locations for 3XN Architects overlook the harbour and most of 3XNs projects are located by the waterfront.  Examples are the recently completed Saxo Bank and Horten Law Offices in Tuborg Harbour north of Copenhagen; the Museum of Liverpool on the Mersey River in Liverpool; the soon to break ground ‘Blue Planet Aquarium’ located at the seaside in Copenhagen; and of course one of 3XNs most well known projects – The Muziekgebouw Concert Hall in Amsterdam right on the water’s edge with a public promenade leading through the building in the middle of the harbour.
