Waterfronts and Urban Sustainability Agenda

Successful waterfronts have a high value and therefore offer unique opportunities for the development of sustainalbe urban life.  However, waterfronts are often the target for commercially led urban interventions, which may result in solutions that are not only socially, economically and environmentally unsustainable, but are also insensitive to the local terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.  This presentation argues for the need for an integrated and multifunctinal approach to support sustainable living agendas.  This requires innovative interventions, which capatise on the distinctive potential of waterfronts to stimulate vibrant and quality urban environments that are not only conducive to mixed uses and activities, but also supportive of the three pillars of sustainability (social, economic and environmental).
