Recent Japanese Waterfront Developments - Global vs Local This study outlines the trend of waterfront (re-)development in Japan during the recent decades by presenting some significant urban and architectural projects located in large cities (such as Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe) and other local and regional centers. The analysis of these projects, seen and proposed as exemplary case study, presents a concise overview of the representative Japanese waterfront design approach, which spans from massive mega-scale urban projects with high international ambitions, typical of the sustained economic growth since the early 1980s, to a more limited and contained scale of the very recent sea-front developments, aimed to create more friendly and community-oriented environments
