Waterfronts, and the remaking of East London London is a world city with a history and heritage going back to Roman times. Its more recent history includes severe industrial decline and devastation as a result of the second World War, particularly in east London. This decline has created needs among the people of East London, particularly in terms of new housing and improvements to public realm. But it has also created immense opportunity because of the availability of brownfield (deindustrialised) land suitable for development. The government has recognised this, and specified that well over half the development needed to accommodate London’s growth will happen in East London. This session will look at recent and planned future developments in East London (Canary Wharf, Greenwich Peninsula, Canning Town, Barking Riverside) and how they make good use of the extensive waterways (principally the River Thames and the River Lea) and incorporate high quality modern design, as well as seeking to meet high standards of sustainability. It will also look at the development of the Olympic Park and athlete’s village as London prepares to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic
